The original plan was simply to head south down the Scottish mainland coast to finish that leg of the UK journey, but looking out from Stoer on the day, I made the call to turn off the coast and take a wide loop through the islands instead. That spur-of-the-moment decision kicked off with an 18-hour, 73 km crossing of The Minch to reach Lemreway on Lewis. From there, the route worked south through Harris, North Uist, Benbecula, and South Uist, wild-camping along the way and taking things day by day with the tides. Another window opened a direct path across the Sea of the Hebrides—an 82 km, 15-hour push to Tiree—before paddling on through Coll and across the Sound of Iona to land on Mull. A detour that started on a whim ended up becoming one of the most memorable stretches of the whole journey, carried by the weather, long open water, and the kindness of the people on the islands.
